A player each from 19 of the league’s teams is taking part in the competition
La Liga and sponsors Santander have joined Spanish video game influencer, Ibai Llanos, in his charity FIFA 20 tournament.
The sports commentator put out a call to the league on 16 March to create the competition, and now the governing body and title sponsor have become involved. Viewers will be encouraged to make donations to UNICEF to help with the health crisis.
Players from 19 of the leagues team’s will be taking part – minus Mallorca and their winger Alejandro Pozo, who was originally lined up to play but was not involved in the final draw.
Named the #LaLigaSantanderChallenge, La Liga’s official video gaming competition, eLaLiga Santander, will provide support to make sure all goes smoothly. Technical production of it will be handled by LVP, the company that is also in charge of this for eLaLiga.
Coverage will be provided through all the official La Liga and eLaLiga channels, as well as a stream on Twitch and Movistar+ channel Movistar Deportes. In addition, the Movistar #Vamos news bulletins will offer live link-ups to the challenge.
The draw on Thursday already saw over 65,000 people tune in to watch, and the tournament itself is sure to draw attention. Content will be made available to broadcasters in addition to the channels named above.
Renowned football Spanish football commentators, Miguel Angel Roman, Manolo Lama and Ruben Martin, have also agreed to take part – commentating on the action from their homes.
This is yet another move that sees traditional sports become involved in esports as the coronavirus pandemic continues to stop other events from going ahead. Formula One driver Lando Norris and other F1 racers took part in esports events recently, and we have seen many competitions look at the idea.
