Ambitious trial will showcase the potential of 5G in enabling high-quality remote production.

Catalan Broadcasting Corporation (CCMA) channel TV3 is running a 5G ‘immersive sport experience’ next weekend, at the MOTUL FIM Superbike World Championship (WorldSBK).

The tournament, at Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya 18-20 September, sees Vodafone providing a 5G service along the track and in the box area.

The race video signal from six cordless television cameras will be sent through the 5G network to the cloud from where the live content will be remotely vision mixed and broadcast.

Three of the cameras will be ‘state-of-the-art’ mobile models, while a fourth PTZ (point, tilt, zoom) camera will capture behind-the-scenes images from the 5G test.

Additionally, a GoPro, will be controlled remotely by the operator (Armando Folgado)’s eyes. Folgado will use special glasses to enable this to happen.

All these cameras will be connected via 5G, while a sixth 360º camera on the track’s main straightaway will enable viewers to select, from home, the point of view they want through TV3’s YouTube channel.

CCMA says the conditions of the superbike speed races will “put the features and new possibilities of 5G (image quality, special effects, low latency, etc) to the test in a real case of televised transmission.”
