The first team and under-23s will be playing each other for bragging rights

Premier League football club Wolves is launching its new esports tournament portal by streaming its first team and under-23’s squads in a FIFA 20 competition.

With football paused during the coronavirus lockdown, the Midlands team has turned to its esports offering to continue engaging with fans.

The matches between the players will be streamed on Twitch, using Wolves’ esports channel, and it will start at 8pm, Thursday 26 March. Diogo Jota and Maximilian Kilman will be among the first team squad members taking part in the competition.

The winner of their tournament will then play the winner of a supporters’ tournament that will begin earlier in the day at 5.30pm, with 128 participant slots available.

This move follows in the footsteps of other clubs and sports that have turned to esports while traditional sport has been suspended. Similarly in football, there is the tournament organised by lower league side Leyton Orient currently happenning and La Liga’s recent FIFA 20 LaLigaSantanderChallenge competition – which raised money for EFL clubs and coronavirus-related causes respectively.
