This will give broadcasters more idea of how long they will have to plan for
The Premier League, EFL, WSL, and FA have decided to further postpone their competitions until 30 April at the earliest.
In addition, the FA’s board has agreed to alter the rule that states “the season shall terminate not later than the 1 June”. This could mean that the season will be completed over the summer, after Euro 2020 was suspended until 2021.
Indeed, the statement says: “We have collectively supported UEFA in postponing EURO 2020 to create space in the calendar to ensure domestic and European club league and cup matches have an increased opportunity to be played and, in doing so, maintain the integrity of each competition.”
This could have a knock-on effect with broadcasters. Sky Sports has already offered to pause subscriptions to its sport content, and consumers will now be watching to see if BT Sport follows in its footsteps. With domestic football ruled out for a further length of time, it may have little option.
There have also been reports that the broadcasters could look to legal action to recoup losses.
