Broadcaster to distribute list of words and phrases to avoid to commentators, reporters and presenters.
Sky Sports is reportedly planning to issue a list of banned words for commentators and sports reporters to avoid, as they might offend viewers.
The broadcaster is also holding training sessions for presenters, commentators and reporters to ensure their use of language excludes terms and phrases associated with ‘deep-rooted racial stereotypes’.
The list of banned words and phrases is likely to include the term ‘nitty gritty’, the origins of which some believe have links to slavery.
According to a report in the Mail Online, the list will be sent this week and has been formed in response to the global discussions triggered by the Black Lives Matter movement.
A statement from Sky Sports said: “Our support is for the moral cause and campaign, that Black Lives Matter, rather than for any political organisation.”
