App aimed at creating a better, more responsive second-screen experience.

Facebook has launched a live streaming iOS and Android app called Venue, which focuses on enhancing fan engagement through the second-screen.

It has been developed by Facebook’s New Product Experimentation team and aims to bring fans and expert commentators together to “experience live events in a new interactive way,” says Facebook.

It’s a second-screen app, making it possible for commentators to create ‘moments’ — short-lived digital opportunities for fans to connect — whenever they think something memorable or interesting is happening on the track.

Fans are notified whenever a new moment is created so that they can hop in and out of Venue if they want to.

The app is essentially a curated, interactive second-screen experience, centred on the pivotal moments of live streamed events.

Facebook has teamed up with Nascar for its return to live sport following the coronavirus lockdown.

With fans currently unable to attend races, Facebook hopes Venue will make it possible for fans to feel like they are experiencing Nascar together.

It will enable fans to hear from expert commentators, including well-known personalities, journalists, athletes, and fan-analysts, who will each ‘host a venue’ for each race.

This means they will be able to provide commentary, pose interactive questions and polls, and open up short chats, all around specific moments in the race.

Facebook says you should think of commentators as personal concierges for the main event.

Nascar is bringing in social media personality, nascarcasm from nascar.com, Fox Sports Nascar reporter Alan Cavanna, and Nascar driver Landon Cassill to host venues.

Venue is currently available in the US and is “experimental and subject to change,” says Facebook.

Tim Clark, SVP and chief digital officer, Nascar, said: “As Nascar makes its return to action over the coming weeks, Venue will provide users with a unique and exciting way to connect with fellow race fans from around the globe – all from the safety and comfort of their own homes. Nascar was built on innovation, and we couldn’t be more excited to help a great partner like Facebook’s New Product Experimentation team innovate around new platforms.”
