The pay-tv broadcaster will also stop billing commercial clients
Sky has offered to pause payments on sports subscriptions for all residential customers.
The pay-tv broadcaster has also revealed that it has stopped billing commercial clients such as pubs and bars as of 14 March.
Sky has seen a number of sport competitions that it holds rights to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. This includes the Premier League and all EFL football, Formula One, and the England cricket team’s tour of Sri Lanka. Customers will have to call the company directly on 0800 151 2747 in order to pause their subscriptions.
It released a statement saying: “While we expect that many of the recently postponed sports events will eventually go ahead, if you wish to pause your sports subscription in the meantime you will not be charged a fee to do so or be held to any notice period.”
“Meanwhile we continue to provide high quality content across all of our 11 sports channels. We are sorry that you are currently unable to pause your Sky Sports subscription online.”
Sky Sports managing director Rob Webster added: “Sky Sports is working closely with all our partners to better understand the impact on the annual sporting calendar.”
“We recognise that it is a fast-moving situation and we are working at speed to ensure we continue to deliver for all of our customers. A number of sporting events have been postponed, but not cancelled, so we expect to be able to show these when they are rescheduled.”
“Therefore, our live schedule is likely to look different for a period of time. As more information becomes available, we will continue to provide updates to all of our customers.”
This decision may put pressure on BT Sport, which has also seen much of its content postponed due to the Covid-19 crisis.
